Making a world of difference

International Community School

Quick Facts

· ICS is a public (charter) school and does not charge tuition.

· ICS is accredited by the Georgia Accrediting Commission.

· As a Georgia charter school, ICS is considered a “start-up” charter school which began operation in the 2002-2003 school year.  We are a member of the Georgia Charter Schools Association.

· As a DeKalb County charter school, ICS is governed by a Board of Directors which holds meetings that are open to the public.  Pursuant to our charter, half of the board members are parents of children at the school.

· Our staff is a diverse group of teachers, recruited from area public and private schools, as well as from schools far away. ICS teachers include many who are multi-lingual and have ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) experience.

· Additionally, these educators are supported by an international group of teaching assistants, a counselor, a learning specialist, a media specialist and an office staff.  The principal, William L. Moon, has 40 years experience as an educator both in the U.S. and abroad.

Details about the

day-to-day life of our school:

· School hours are from 8:25—3:15 Monday—Friday for grades K—4 and from 8:25—4 for 5 and 6th grades.  On the Avondale campuses, an extended day program runs from 3:15—6 p.m. five days per week.  The program offers assistance with homework, exploration of languages and cultures represented by students in school, additional experience and skill building in the arts and training in practical areas.  (Fees for the program are based on criteria from the Federal Free and Reduced Cost Meal program.)

· We serve breakfast and lunch daily in our cafeterias.  Based on family income, many students qualify for free or reduced-cost meals.

· ICS students wear uniforms of navy blue shorts, skirts or pants and light blue or white shirts.  For full uniform policy, call the ICS office.

· The ICS school yearly calendar is slightly different from the DeKalb County public school schedule. We have a short school holiday in September (three days), and a mid-winter break in February. As a result, our school year typically extends into June.  There are 180 days in our school year, as there are for all public schools.

· School buses provide transportation to and from Clarkston and Stone Mountain. Many parents bring their children by car or arrange carpools.

Other programs offered at the school or in association with our school are the:

             School Within A School;

             After-School Enrichment;

             Saturday School.
